Only Human by bluemattersoda Only Human by bluemattersoda
Welcome to Mombassa.
Here it started
and here it will end

Well, i was very close to abandoning this piece, but thanks to everyone's encouragement I finished it off. So thank you every one who offered support and advice - i am truly grateful.

But yep, i'm off to Hong Kong in a few hours, and it's exactly 30 mins to new year where i live, so I guess I should say Happy 2008!!!

again, I can't stress how thankful I am for your support (you know who you are ;) ) - I am now a lot happier with this piece, in fact, very happy :D

thanks all for viewing!

step by step: [link]

Closeup details:[link]

ps: i felt like adding that i used only a couple of textures in this - the camouflage texture, the hessian bag texture for the gloves and some slate textures for some of the rocks. the scratches, foreground rocks and everything else were hand drawn with a tablet

"Spartans get all the glory. Halsey, all the blame.

But what people forget is that it was us, the grunts, those who were only human, who held on in the face of destruction to allow them to secure victory.
Heroes are photogenic and easily sold to the populace. When was the last time you saw a Marine pointed out to the populace, and they were told "They are the ones who hold the line for your 'heroes' to pull off their missions"? Or a Fleet ensign, "they are the ones who die fighting superior Covenant ships, but volunteer anyway"?"

So why this art is titled only human?

It's a play on the phrase "we're only human". Apt for a story about extraterrestial genocide!

It's because the Halo 3 ODST main characters are just ordinary humans

Wow! Stunning picture here sir! Definite fave. However, the armor does look a bit . . . well, big. Weight is always something to take into consideration when making these things. Remember, they're Leathernecks, not SPARTANs - you don't want them to fall down from the weight of the armor.

Nice shading. The upper body looks good and realistic but lower part of the body looks a little bit out of proportion, anatomy study should do the trick. And finally the background looks blend, add more perspective will bring more depth and believable. Thnks to listening to my rant, but I just wanna help u improve your outstanding artistic skill :)

thanks man, and no problems, i honestly prefer it if someone rants rather than leave single word comments ;) i'll try to focus more on anatomy, that seems to be a major problem in my art. thanks for stopping by and sorry for the late reply!

haha, thanks man! It's always flattering to know you've inspired someone. Best of luck, and remember that practice makes better - and I know this from experience and not just from popular culture. Keep at it soldier!

That's great! the details are awesome.
But if i may suggest, it could use a lot more shading, by determining the light source, you could make it a lot more dramatic

haha, i've always felt that the marines were the unsung heroes of the series...and as if they need me to make them baddass - "Get back up so I can kill you again!!". Hoorah!

might i suggest that halo 2 has the most realistic marine. why? because they have the most ammo pouches (LOL) for some reason people always overlook those small details like ammo pouches. *okay i know your marine has some on his chest although realistically thats too few compared to real body armor used by current soldiers.

omg awesome teleportation tech utilized by the UNSC marines to beam their ammos to them from the base awesome! OR tech is so good that bullets are puny therefore equal small magazine which equals more ammo!

his face looks a bit flat but no big deal. some stronger shadows and highlights would let him pop out even better too

wow thanks man! i was quite happy with this piece as well. For the scratches on the armour I just used one of the default brushes in photoshop - the one that looks like a brushstroke? its usually on the bottom, one of the grungy ones. :D and again, thanks for your support!
